Musclemen

These figures hang on the wall. They range in size from 5" to 12".

This series began with two doll arms. I don't remember where I got them. I attached them to a block of wood and cut out the legs. The leg cutout became the muscleman's head. When I decided to continue the series I went to the Sonora Fleamarket in Mexico City to buy dolls. There you can buy every kind of cheap doll imaginable. I removed their arms, legs and heads and left all the torsos in my hotel room. We can only imagine what the cleaning lady thought when she emptied the garbage can.

I

When I lived in New York City I was a member of the Chelsea Gym. For a while it was filled with heavy duty musclemen. One of them was very tall and somewhat ugly but in a beautiful way. He had muscles everywhere a muscle could be developed and his image was rather imposing to say the least. A lot of the guys in the gym were afraid of him and he was aware of this, so to soften his image he usually wore a flower. Sometimes the flower was in a shirt pocket but often as not it was tucked behind his ear. Many of my musclemen wear flowers in memory of my friend whom I adored.
